Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and the Nice Guy Syndrome
May 7 @ 5:45 pm - 8:00 pm MDT
This week we are going to talk about obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and the Nice Guy Syndrome.
While the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) does not list under OCD under anxiety disorders, OCD and the nice guy syndrome are both anxiety management disorders. That is not unusual for nice guys to have some obsessive behaviors in their attempt to try and keep their world smooth and problem-free.
A lot of OCD fears are identical to Nice Guy fears. The beliefs and behaviors of OCD and Nice Guy Syndrome grew out of childhood situations where the child did not feel safe; it might have been trauma, it might have been abuse, it might have been abandonment, it might have been inconsistent parental behavior. This triggered emotional fear deep in the limbic system part of the brain. And then the child developed defenses to try and prevent bad things from happening again.
This week, we will discuss ways to soothe anxiety, including scheduling obsessive appointments to help mitigate the behaviors that hold men back.
